Set above the Tjampuhan ridge, with the shadow of Mount Agung beyond, Indus is shaped by space, light, and the rhythm of the day. Hand-carved columns, terrazzo, and teak define an open, breezy setting.
Established in 1998, it remains one of Ubud’s enduring tables, where Balinese and Asian flavours come together with a lightness of touch.
Across two levels, the space moves from shared tables to quieter corners. Come at dusk, or arrive for lunch and let the day unfold.
Once a month, the microphone is yours.
Open Mic at Indus is a monthly evening of poetry, spoken word, and short prose, held on the terrace above the Tjampuhan valley. Hosted by the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival — one of Asia’s great literary gatherings — it is open to anyone with something to say and the courage to say it.
Established writers and first-timers share the same stage. The valley doesn’t judge. Neither do we.
Come to read, or come to listen. Both are equally welcome. The bar is open throughout. The kitchen serves until late.
Indus has been part of Ubud’s literary life since Janet DeNeefe founded the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in 2004. Open Mic at Indus is where that story continues, every month, all year round.
Where the evening learns how to listen.
Once a month, upstairs at Indus goes quiet. DJ Ebes holds the night.
Arrive at five. Order a drink. Take a table. Open a book. Around you, a room of strangers does the same. A minimal soundtrack plays beneath everything, low enough to disappear into. Light is kept low. The mood is attentive.
Phones away. Pages open.
At 5:30, everyone reads. Together. In silence. Above the Tjampuhan valley, as the light turns and the valley becomes golden.
When the bell sounds at 6:30, the spell lifts. Music rises. Voices return. Strangers who have spent an hour in the same private world begin to speak, about what they’re reading, what stayed with them, what surprised them.
DJ Ebes takes the room from there. The bar warms. The usual evening resumes, but changed by what has been shared.
It is not a book club. It is not a performance. It is a deliberate pause in the rhythm of modern life, and then a very good night out.
Bring a book. Any book. No agenda.
